I am a multimedia sculptor whose work revolves around my experiences as a Black woman and mother. My work explores the nuances and intersections of race, gender, and violence. Working within these themes help me make sense of the world.
I have yet to find a material I don’t like, so my work takes many forms. The pieces I make are conceptual and typically depict abstracted human forms. I work with a range of materials and let my ideas determine the shape and form of my work. My sculptures include traditional materials like metals, ceramics, and fibers, as well as non-traditional materials like found objects, kanekalon, and eggs.
My work is deeply personal and relates to my own experiences. The events of my life are my main influence but I admire the works of Sonya Clark, Ana Mendieta, and Mona Hatoum. I hope that I can follow their lead by letting my identity help to shape my work and leave a lasting impact on viewers.
