Ann(ie) uses her work to process her own experiences with a focus on race and gender. These parts of her identity shape her work and give her an outlet to explore and express her connection to these aspects of herself. She hopes that through her work she can relay some of her experiences and share a moment of connection with the viewer.

Artist Statement

I am a multimedia sculptor whose work revolves around my experiences as a Black woman. My work explores the nuances and intersections of race, gender, and violence. Working within these themes help me make sense of the world.

I have yet to find a material I don’t like, so my work takes many forms. The pieces I make are conceptual and typically depict abstracted human forms. I work with a range of materials and let my ideas determine the shape and form of my work. My sculptures include traditional materials like metals, ceramics, and fibers, as well as non-traditional materials like found objects, hair, and eggs.

My work is deeply personal and relates to my own experiences. The events of my life are my main influence but I admire the works of Sonya Clark, Ana Mendieta, and Mona Hatoum. I hope that I can follow their lead by letting my identity help to shape my work and leave a lasting impact on viewers.
